Valley of Fear Ch. 1-4

As a quasi-avid consumer of Sherlock Holmes and other mystery novels, I was somewhat excited when I began this assigned reading. When I began reading, Holmes’ excitement and undercurrent energy at the opportunity to solve a mystery excited me also, and spurred me on in my reading (as did my desire not fail). The level-headedness and excitement that Holmes displays at the inspector’s exclamation that a man has been killed in Sussex illustrates his love of mystery and dedication to the craft. Doyle relates Holmes to a “chemist who sees the crystals falling into position…” (Doyle 181); this metaphor paints a picture of Holmes as an artisan working in his craft and an intellectual functioning at full capacity. Despite just learning of a gruesome crime, Holmes possesses the ability to look past what has taken place and sift through the new information to determine a plan of action. While this cool logic could be viewed as somewhat frightening and mechanical, Holmes’ lack of a negative emotional outburst is not disturbing and instead showcases Holmes’ deep enjoyment for solving problems and using his superior intelligence. Watson even states that this is “one of [the] moments that [Holmes] existed” for (Doyle 181).

In addition, Doyle creates a movie-like atmosphere, with cliffhangers at the end of some chapters and witty dialogue. Holmes’ words help to characterize him; he displays a superior intellect and a dry sense of humor through dialogue, and a cool, logical mind in response to pressure and disturbing news. Once the crime scene is presented specific details such as the terrible condition of the victim's head, obscure body markings, the discovery of boot prints, and a missing wedding ring allow the reader to feel present; the energy and spontaneous discovery of clues is thrilling.

Furthermore, the concept of Moriarty looming in the background adds to the suspense of the novel. Holmes’ is well-able to identify the capacities of those around him, and since he considers Moriarty to be of the highest order of evil, he sparks interest and questions in the reader. Also, Doyle’s writing style is excellent. Almost every sentence served as a demonstration of finesse and skill. I look forward to increasing my own ability to write, and creating stories that may leave indelible impressions on the minds of readers.
