Piers Plowman 8/9
Passus 9 was actually somewhat interesting because it had an inception-like sequence of trippy introspection.
"A meke man, me thoughte, lyk to myselven,
Com and calde me by my ryghthe name.
'What are thou,' quod I, "that my name knowest?'
'That wost thou wel,' quod he, 'and no wyghth betere.'
'Wot I,' quod I, 'who art thou?' 'Thought,' than he seyde;"
(A.9.63-68)
Basically in the above passage the Dreamer finds a dude that he thinks looks like him. The doppelgänger guy comes up to him and calls him by his name. The Dreamer gets tripped out by this and asks how he knows him. The other guy basically says I know you well, and I know no person better than you, and then introduces himself as Thought.
This is interesting because the Dreamer is inside of his own dream, experiencing a world created by his own thoughts. He is then exploring this world of his thoughts, where he meets a guy named Thought (who the Dreamer thought up into existence), that looks like him, and therefore represents him, because as the dreamer, he is a thinker. To go even deeper, he is creating their interaction in his thoughts, while also thinking about and participating in the interaction.
The dreamer then asks Thought if he can tell him where Dowel is, which is interesting because he’s asking a representation of himself within his own thoughts for directions to a guy that exists within his own thoughts. Essentially, he's asking himself where to find someone that he created.
To top it all off, he thanks Thought for his help at the end of the passus, which is the equivalent of thanking himself for his own advice and teachings. ["I thanked Thoughth tho, so that he me taughthe:" (A.9.103)]
I really didn't understand the part of the story where Thought came in, so your post really cleared this up for me. I also really like your analysis of the kind of trippy "inception" aspect of this section of passus 9 - when you really think about it, its kind of like a never-ending circle involving the dreamer's dreams, subconscious, and more which is very confusing but also a cool idea.
