Poe Story

I did some background research on Edgar Allen Poe and discovered that two female figures in his early life perished while they were close to him. This may have been some of the inspiration for the murder of the 2 women in the Rue Morgue. The Murders of the Rue Morgue and its characters were extremely similar to A Study in Scarlet as well as other Holmes stories, which were clearly heavily based on Poe's mystery stories.

Dupin is very similar to Holmes but I would say that his abilities are much more subtle. He comes to the conclusion about which actor the narrator had been thinking of only because he knew the narrator personally and was aware of his thinking style. Dupin describes his ability as merely "analysis" or "observation" in contrast to Holmes' "science of deduction".

The story itself was very intriguing but the ending was definitely surprising. The entire story had a very serious tone for the most part, from the narrator raving over Dupin's intelligence to Dupin displaying his skill in mystery solving. It almost seems as if the whole "blame it on the monkey" part of the story was a sort of joke that Poe might have just had fun blending into the story. It is also very creative as it shows that the crux of this story was the "journey" so to speak and that the means by which a a conclusion was reached is the most entertaining part rather than the figurative "unmasking" of the culprit when the story ends.

Dupin seems like he was very much a normal person that isn't nearly as neurotic as Holmes, especially due to how down to earth he acts. This story as a whole was very gripping and I hope I get the chance to read more of Poe's mysteries in the future.
