Psycho

Let me start off by saying, this movie is a million times better than The Maltese Falcon.

This is what I call a mystery because there is murder AND suspense. Despite this being a 1960s movie and my expectations of it being corny-scary (the dramatic music was just funny), the suspense was enough to have a horror movie enthusiast like myself on the edge of my seat. I had a  "WTF" moment when I saw him pop out of nowhere dressed like his mother. It was a little slow in the beginning of the movie which made me think this movie was going to be a flop but it wasn't!!!!

My first impression of this movie was that the characters are very attractive. Sam, Norman, and obviously Marion and her sister Lila all have gorgeous features. Although Norman is totally psycho, he is still a cutie. Sam was just yum.

When I saw Bates Motel, I immediately thought of the show on Netflix.  I've never seen it but now I'm interested in watching it over this break.

I was shook when Mrs. Bates murdered Marion in the shower!!!!! I really thought she was going to be the star of the movie. And then Mrs. Bates popped out of nowhere again and killed the private investigator. He/she really began to freak me out right about then.

The movie was soooooooo suspenseful towards the last 15 mins of the movie when Lila was hiding in the house and Norman was running into the house. And then you see him barge into the room wearing a wig and robe with a huge knife. The entire time the psychiatrist (also very hot) was explaining Norman's case, I was like o________O!!! I honestly thought of the Oedipus complex.

Norman's creepy smile at the end of the movie really just brought everything together. I loved this movie! I give it 4 out of 5 stars!!!

  1. I definitely enjoyed this movie a lot ... and would even venture out and give it a solid 5 out of 5 stars ... but I am not sure that it really constitutes a mystery. This movie is a really good thriller, courtesy of all the action, murder, and suspense you pointed out that really makes the movie-goer's hairs stand on edge. But there really is not a mystery, an unknown enigma, to solve. Sure, the big reveal is that Norman is actually the murderer and has a split personality with his long-dead mother, except that was not portrayed as a mystery at all. The vast majority of the time, the movie-goer thought the death was committed by Norman's mother, and the subsequent plot with Arbogast and Lila were just them figuring it out by themselves. There was no mystery, rather a big plot twist that completely turned Norman's character.

  2. I really liked your explanation of your reaction to Marion getting killed in the shower because I had a really similar reaction. I realized that I always tend to tell myself that whoever seems to be the main character in the movie will just inevitably live throughout the entire plot, and honestly this usually ends up being true. That's why I was extremely caught off guard by this moment and even more terrified of Mrs. Bates/Norman/whatever I'm supposed to call it. I also love how you bring up that the characters are all attractive because I noticed this as well and it definitely made the movie more entertaining.

  3. I am glad I am not the only one who thought that the actors were all very attractive. I also thought of the show Bates Motel, and like you, I am interested in watching it now. I think this movie had some of the qualities of a typical mystery story. For example, I thought the debrief by the psychiatrist at the end was very similar to most mysteries where the detective reveals to everyone how he or she solved the mystery.

  4. I agree that it this film can be classified as a mystery since it has hidden information that isn't revealed until the end of the movie and it's a total surprise to the audience. Also, I'm glad you think Sam was yum too. I would 10/10 recommend watching Bates Motel. It's super entertaining and interesting to see how they tie the show in with the movie. I think it's funny that you brought up the Oedipus complex; Norman definitely has mom issues so I like that you made that connection.
